The health of vineyard soils: towards a sustainable viticulture

Visconti et al., 2024

Review into soil health as it relates to vineyards, including soil degradation factors and processes that threaten winegrowing regions, successful soil enhancement practices and future research trends. The authors state that conventional viticulture has harsh impacts on the soil, degrading the soil, jeopardising its sustainability and the very nature of ‘terroir’. Increasing the soil’s organic matter and enhancing the soil’s biological community are key because they benefit many other soil properties of a physical, chemical, and biological nature. This promotes healthy soil functioning, allowing vines to thrive for a long time, whilst minimally disturbing their surrounding environment.
